Nila Raja
Based in: London
Nila Raja is an enchanting vocalist and multi-instrumentalist playing piano, persian santoor, viola and tabla. She is also a profound composer and songwriter, writing her own material which she performs live with flamenco guitar, kora and chapman stick.
Nila is currently Emerging Artist in Residence at the Southbank Centre and is performing regularly at the Royal Festival Hall with her band as part of EAR presents. She has also performed in many other prestigious venues including Royal Albert Hall, Bridgewater Hall and the Millennium Dome as well as many major club venues across the UK.
Her sound has been described as "ethereal" and "mesmerizing" and reveals a wide range of influences and musical diversity, crossing over many genres. Nila has a particular interest in music from other cultures drawing on Indian, Arabic and Flamenco traditions and fusing them with western sounds. Coming from a mixed descent of Indian and English background her music echoes this fusion and confusion.
Nila has worked with Nitin Sawhney, John Paul Jones (led zeppelin), Mad Professor and Max Moya (Ojos de brujo) amongst others.
She is releasing her EP Unattached to Desire in July 2008.
